An Age Old Discipline

Pilates was original invented by German-born Joseph H. Pilates a century ago. He was a sickly child plagued by asthma and rickets, leading him to become obsessed with a way to achieve the perfect body. Joseph sought to create a discipline that combined the physique of the ancient Greeks with the meditative strength of many eastern cultures; the result was Pilates. The system he created focuses on exercises he called "contrology." They require intense concentration and focus on a strong abdomen, deep stretching, and focused breathing. His views on his system can best be summarized in this quote:
